We are thankful that Loraine Masiya Mponela prepared a poem for the online launch on 23 April 2025:
I am a product of many communities
I am a child of many communities
I belong here
I am a sister
not just an asylum seeker
my little voice has become a speaker
I use it
to channel my thoughts
since February 2016
I have fully been accepted
by groups and organisations
with alacrity
fighting for basic human rights
that so many take granted for
I filled my days with activities
driven by purposeful chores
I realised that many wanted my opinion
I found peace for my overloaded brain
got immersed in the freedom train
my mind grew bigger
eager to help others
moving away from the selfish strain
I heard my own voice initially
from deep inside me
I spoke for others
boldness became my vessel
transporting me to greater levels
community helped me find my feet
my eyes were opened
realising that we are all one
a community tied together at the hip
I live in Coventry
the city for peace and reconciliation
still reeling from the traumas
of the second world war
like Coventry we are all in recovery mode
seeking life’s meaning
as we watch our bodies
bit by bit
retire
