Call on the Prime Minister to protect refugees in the Mediterranean

2 September 2015 Refugee Council: Please act now

The world is in the grip of the greatest refugee crisis in recent memory.

Shamefully, our leaders’ response has been to build the walls of fortress Europe ever higher, leaving desperate people dying disgracefully on our doorstep in the Mediterranean Sea.

We must resettle more people; bringing them directly and safely to European countries. We must also allow people to reunite with their loved ones; by making it easier for refugees to join their relatives already living in safety in Britain.

Ask your MP to call on the Prime Minister to act now.

Please follow the simple instructions that follow to email your MP. It will only take a couple of minutes but could help save lives.

Preface: OHCHR’s Recommended Principles and Guidelines on Human Rights at International Borders contains three recommended principles, all of which are derived from international human rights law and establish the obligation of States to protect, respect and fulfil human rights of all migrants at international borders;

A. The primacy of human rights: Human rights should be at the centre of all border governance measures.

B. Non-discrimination: Migrants should be protected against any form of discrimination at borders.

C. Assistance and protection from harm: States should consider the individual circumstances of all migrants at borders, and ensure effective protection and access to justice. Continue reading “RECOMMENDED PRINCIPLES and GUIDELINES on HUMAN RIGHTS at INTERNATIONAL BORDERS”

Powerful witnessing from Calais

2015 Aug 19 CalaisFacebook: https://www.facebook.com/groups/CalaisMigrantSolidarityActionFromUK/

If you know me please read this, feel free to share it if it resonates with you.

I think that the running theme that seems to come out of a visit to calais sprawling new jungle migrant camp is that its a place that verges on being inexplicable in words alone.
I consider myself to be a really strong person emotionally and yet my very short visit there to drop off the provisions that many of you kindly paid for has shaken my understanding of myself to its very core.
I consider myself to be compassionate, I am not compassionate enough.
I consider myself to be informed, I am not informed enough.
I believe that I see everyone as equal, I realise it is not enough to just “believe” this.
I think I question everything I read in the media, I now know that I don’t even come close.
I always thought that my values rested firmly in equality. I know now that my version of equality is completely wrapped up in my own little bubble of experience. Continue reading “Powerful witnessing from Calais”

How many asylum seekers are really coming to the UK as European migrant crisis continues

Independent: Only four per cent of first-time asylum applications across Europe in the first quarter of this year were lodged in the UK
LIZZIE DEARDEN: Saturday 08 August 2015

Despite panic about the “swarms” of migrants supposedly trying to reach British shores from Calais, only four per cent of Europe’s asylum seekers are applying to stay in the UK.

Statistics from the European Commission show that 185,000 people applied for asylum for the first time across the EU in the first three months of this year, but only a tiny fraction were in Britain.

Calais: Statistics and facts matter. So do people.

Unguided PhilosophyUnguided Philosophy: Monday, 3 August 2015 –

I will start by clearly defining the parameters of this post: This post is regarding asylum seekers, and specifically the events that are unfolding in Calais, it is not about economic migrants, it is about people who have migrated because they feel they have no other option.

Statistics and facts matter. So do people.

The Huffington Post published a brilliant article at the end of last month by Robin Lustig titled “Is It Time for Some Facts about Those Migrants?” (You can read it here). In it Mr. Lustig attempts to dispel some of the anti-asylum seeker rhetoric through a very simple tactic: the use of facts. This can be shocking to those who wish to postulate based solely on some populist rhetoric based in the fear of Britain no longer being Great. In this post I want to provide a brief overview of the arguments presented in the article as well as expand on them to include the reasons why much of the reasoning we hear to why we shouldn’t help others is dangerous and based in a false notion of us and them.  Continue reading “Calais: Statistics and facts matter. Calais Migrant Crisis Quiz: 15 Questions To Test Your Knowledge

Huffington Post  By

Attempts by migrants to reach Britain have reached an all time high as hundreds of people rushed the Channel Tunnel for a third night in chaotic scenes on Wednesday.

Prime Minister David Cameron promised that the Government “will do everything we can” to improve the situation, including spending ÂŁ7 million on fencing at the Eurotunnel terminal.

MigreuropAn appeal for a migrant, asylum seeker and refugee reception policy
